The film starts with the DreamWorks logo from '97, but after it's finished, the S's turn green. Next, an old storybook opens on its own to a man reading aloud: "Once upon a time there was a princess with an enchantment of a fearful sort, that could only be broken by true love’s first kiss." She's locked in a castle guarded by a fire-breathing dragon,
where many brave knights have tried and failed. The story goes on about how she waits for her true love and his kiss. Then the narrator says [laughing] "Like that’s ever gonna happen." Shrek interrupts with: "Yeah right, like that's ever gonna happen!" Meanwhile, Smash Mouth starts playing their song 'All Star'. While it plays, Shrek goes about his
day in a nearby town where villagers gather to hunt him down. Smash Mouth sings: ♪ Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me I ain’t the sharpest tool in the shed... ...and all that glitters is gold Only shootin’ stars break the mold ♪ During this, Shrek has his own response to the music, belching and enjoying himself. The villagers eventually
get close to Shrek's home where they discuss their plan. An Ogre Hunter says: "Think it’s in there?" Another replies with: "All right. Let's get it!" One of them warns: "Do you know what that thing can do to you? It'll grind your bones for its bread." Shrek sneaks up behind them, laughing. He then tells them: "Actually, that would be a giant. Now ogres,
they’re much worse. They’ll make a suit from your freshly peeled skin. Ogre Hunter 4: No! Shrek: And squeeze the jelly from your eyes! Actually, it’s quite good on toast." The villagers panic and wave their torches but Shrek calmly extinguishes one like a match. In response, he lets out an extremely loud roar that puts out all the nearby fires. Shrek:
"Time's up, guys. You can run, but you'll just get tired." [The men scatter.] Shrek laughs and picks up a paper that reads, "Wanted: Fairy tale creatures." He sighs, looks down, and throws the paper away. [The next day, there is a line of fairy tale creatures at a table where guards are paying for capturing them. There are cages all around. Peter Pan
carries Tinkerbell in a cage, Geppetto carries Pinocchio, and a farmer carries the three little pigs.] Guard: "Alright, this one's full. Take it away! Move along!" Head guard: "Next!" [The guards take turns collecting fairy tale creatures, including the witch's broom, which they break. Captain of the Guards pays 20 pieces of silver for the witch.] Little
Bear: [crying] "This cage is too small." Donkey: "Please, don't turn me in. I'll never be stubborn again. I can change. Please! Give me another chance!" Old Woman: "Oh, shut up." (to Donkey) "Talk, you boneheaded dolt-!" Captain of the Guards: "Get her out of my sight." [The guards grab the old woman and struggle with her. One of her legs kicks
Tinkerbell out of Peter Pan's hands, and her cage drops on Donkey's head, covering him in fairy dust. He can fly.] Donkey: "Ha! I can fly! Now I'm a flying, talking Donkey. You might have seen a housefly or even a superfly, but you ain't never seen a Donkey fly." [The pixie dust begins to wear off, and he starts sinking to the ground. He hits it with a
thud.] Captain of the Guards: "Seize him!" [Donkey takes off running, pursued by guards.] After Shrek confronts some guards, he heads back to his cottage, only to be followed by Donkey. The little donkey is thrilled to have seen Shrek in action and decides to stick with him, even though he doesn't have any friends. Shrek is surprised but lets Donkey
tag along. As they walk, Donkey sings a silly song about having no one else beside him, and Shrek tells him to stop. The donkey is undeterred and shares his honest opinion that only a true friend would be so brutally truthful. Shrek introduces himself as an ogre, but Donkey doesn't seem fazed by it. In fact, he likes Shrek's carefree attitude and
respects the fact that Shrek doesn't seem to care what others think of him. As they approach Shrek's cottage, Donkey is amazed by its beauty (or lack thereof) and commends Shrek on his decorating skills. Despite not being a fan of entertaining, Shrek welcomes Donkey into his home, and it seems like an unlikely friendship may be brewing. Donkey
asks to stay with Shrek, citing his own experiences as an outcast. Despite initial hesitation, Shrek relents and allows Donkey to spend the night on one condition: just one night. However, Donkey takes advantage of the offer and proceeds to make himself at home, declaring that he'll be staying up late swapping stories and making waffles. Meanwhile,
various unwanted guests start arriving in Shrek's cottage, including three blind mice who are looking for a new place to live, followed by Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, who are trying to find a spot to rest. The Big Bad Wolf is also found lounging in Shrek's bed, and when confronted, he claims that he was just trying to get some peace and quiet.
The chaos escalates as more guests arrive, including bears, a pied piper with rats, elves directing air traffic for fairies and witches, and even three good fairies who are trying to avoid the commotion. Shrek becomes increasingly frustrated, shouting "What am I doing in my swamp?!" as he tries to restore order and reclaim his home. Shrek is trying to
evict a group of fairy tale creatures from his swamp, but they refuse to leave. They're led by Lord Farquaad, who has forced them to come there. Shrek decides to go and confront Farquaad to get the creatures off his land. He takes Donkey with him on their journey. Along the way, they visit Duloc, where they find the Gingerbread Man being tortured
by a masked man. However, when Lord Farquaad arrives, he's more interested in playing with the Gingerbread Man than torturing him. The Gingerbread Man eventually reveals that the others are hiding in the swamp and gives away their location. Farquaad is furious and demands to know where the rest of the fairy tale creatures are. He learns that
they're hiding from him and vows to catch them. Shrek and Donkey return to the swamp, ready to face whatever challenges come their way. Looking at something that is covered up can be very exciting for someone like the gingerbread man. But there is no need to get excited because he is in trouble after talking to Farquaad's magic mirror.
Farquaad wants to become a king and only needs to marry one of three princesses shown on his magic mirror. The first bachelorette is Cinderella who likes sushi, hot tubbing and cleaning for her evil sisters. The second is Snow White who lives with seven men and can be very difficult. The last one is Princess Fiona who lives in a dragon-guarded
castle surrounded by lava. Farquaad has to choose between these three princesses. But there is something that happens at night that he needs to think about before he makes his decision. Shrek and Donkey walked into DuLoc, where everything was quiet and elevator music played. They looked around but saw no one. Suddenly, an information box
opened with little wooden people singing about following rules and staying in line. A camera took their picture, and they were informed that the tournament would begin soon, with Shrek as the target to kill. The crowd cheered and chased after them, but Shrek got away by grabbing a spear and fighting off the men. Donkey escaped on a beer barrel,
squishing two men into the mud. As the chaos ensued, Joan Jett appeared, singing about not caring about her reputation or others' opinions. She sang "I don't give a **** about my reputation" while Shrek continued to fight. Shrek participates in a wrestling match, where he faces off against a man trying to sneak up behind him and gets to smash a
chair over his opponent's head, securing a win for himself. However, things take a turn when Farquaad appears and offers Shrek a deal: if he completes a quest on behalf of the tyrannical ruler, Farquaad will return Shrek's swamp that was taken over by fairy tale creatures. Shrek is skeptical but agrees to the terms. As they set out on their journey,
Donkey expresses his concerns about the quest and how it may benefit Shrek, who is more interested in getting his swamp back than saving a princess or fighting a dragon. Shrek explains that there's more to being an ogre than people think, comparing them to onions with layers. The conversation takes a humorous turn as Donkey tries to understand
why Shrek can't just use brute force to get what he wants and Shrek reveals the complexity of being an ogre. The two friends continue their journey, with Shrek still focused on retrieving his swamp despite the misgivings from his trusty sidekick. MINIATURE BEAST OF BURDEN! OGRES ARE LIKE ONIONS! End of story! Bye-bye! See ya later! Shrek
and Donkey continue their journey to Princess Fiona's castle, which appears as a giant volcano/keep surrounded by boiling lava. Donkey is initially afraid of the heights but Shrek offers emotional support, encouraging him to take baby steps. As they near the castle, Donkey reveals he's just a little uncomfortable with the situation and starts looking
down into the lava, panicking. Shrek convinces him to keep moving forward, but eventually tells Donkey to return to safety. I'm literally terrified, we're all gonna die. Okay, cool, I just stepped onto solid ground. That'll do, Donkey, that'll do. Donkey: Yeah, no kidding, where's the fire-breathing pain-in-the-neck? Shrek: She's inside the castle, waiting
for us to rescue her. (chuckles) Donkey: I was talking about the dragon, dude! INSIDE THE CASTLE[] Donkey: You're scared, huh? Shrek: No way, but... Shh. Donkey: Alright, cool. Me neither, then. 'Cause there's no shame in being afraid when faced with a fire-breathing dragon that eats knights and breathes fire. I mean, who wouldn't be scared? I
know I'm not a coward; I just have healthy respect for danger. Shrek: Listen, Donkey, shut up and go find the stairs. Donkey: Stairs? We were looking for Princess Fiona, dude! Shrek: The princess will be in the highest room of the tallest tower. I read it in a book once. (puts on helmet) Donkey: Sweet, you're handling the dragon; I'll handle the stairs.
Those stairs won't know what hit 'em. EMPTY ROOM[] [Donkey continues talking to himself as he searches for stairs.] Donkey: I'm gonna take charge, kick butt, and show those stairs who's boss. (looks around) I've mastered stairs; I can step all over them. (an eye opens elsewhere in the room) ELSEWHERE[] [Shrek spots light in tallest tower window]
Shrek: Well, at least we know where Fiona is, but... Donkey: DRAGON! [Donkey gasps and runs off as dragon roars again. Shrek saves him just in time.] Shrek: Watch out, Donkey! (grabs dragon's tail) Gotcha! The dragon gets irritated, flings Shrek through the air, and he crashes into Fiona's room. Donkey: Oh no, oh no! [cornered by dragon] Donkey:
No way, you have such large white teeth. You must bleach yourself because that smile is dazzling. (the dragon blinks) Do I see a hint of minty freshness? And you're... you're a girl dragon! (dragon flutters eyes at him) What's wrong with your eye? Ohh, man, I gotta go. (she blows smoke ring in his face and he coughs) I'm an asthmatic; this isn't
working out. Shrek! (the dragon picks him up) No, Shrek! FIONA'S ROOM[] [Shrek groans as he gets up off the floor.] Shrek lay back on the bed, then jumped up to retrieve a bouquet from the side table. He settled back down, pretending to sleep, but was soon awoken by Fiona's presence. She purred slightly as he approached her, but quickly
snapped awake at his touch. Shrek ordered her to wake up and explained that he wasn't here to rescue her just yet. Fiona pointed out that they were in the middle of a romantic moment, but Shrek told her there was no time for such niceties. As they made their way through the castle, Fiona insisted that they savor the moment and engage in some
poetic exchange, but Shrek had other plans. He explained that he hadn't finished his to-do list - slaying the dragon being at the top of it. The dragon's arrival interrupted them, and Shrek quickly dragged Fiona away from the beast. As they ran, Fiona protested that this wasn't how knights usually approached rescues, but Shrek insisted on doing things
his own way. Shrek grabs Donkey and Princess Fiona as he runs past her, and she screams "It talks!" Shrek replies that it's trying to shut him up. As they near the exit, Shrek gets them close and tells Donkey to stay behind with Fiona while he takes care of the dragon. He throws a sword at the chain links holding the chandelier around the dragon's
neck, causing her to lose control. The group rushes across the bridge as the dragon breathes fire and the ropes collapse. They're swung to safety just in time. The dragon looks angry but then gives a sad whimper as she sees Donkey walk away. Fiona thanks Shrek for rescuing her, calling him amazing and wonderful, even if he is unorthodox. Shrek
declines to remove his helmet because of his "helmet hair," causing Fiona to beg him. She says it's destiny that they'll share a kiss, just like in fairy tales. Donkey thinks this might be part of Shrek's job description, but Shrek disagrees. Fiona insists she knows what it means - a princess is rescued by a brave knight and then shares their first kiss.
Shrek: Are you expecting Prince Charming? Fiona: Actually, yes. Shrek: No, this is all wrong. I was sent to rescue you by Lord Farquaad. Fiona: But why didn't he come for me himself? Shrek: You should ask him that when we arrive. Fiona: I want to be rescued by my true love, not an ogre and his sidekick. Donkey: So much for a noble steed. Shrek:
Your job isn't making things easier for me. Fiona: My problem is not your concern. If Lord Farquaad wants to rescue me properly, I'll wait for him here. Shrek: I'm no one's messenger boy. I'm a delivery boy. Fiona: You wouldn't dare take me with you. Shrek: (picks her up) Come on, Donkey. Donkey: Right behind you. Fiona: Put me down! This is not
dignified! Shrek: (calming down) Okay, okay. We're here. Donkey: So, how do you let someone down easy without hurting their feelings? Fiona: Just tell them they're not your true love. Shrek: Let's get to Duloc before it gets dark. Donkey: It's beautiful there. You'll love it. Fiona: And what about Lord Farquaad? How is he? Shrek: Men of his stature
are rare. Donkey: There are those who think less of him. Fiona: Stop joking. I want to meet him tomorrow. Shrek: Yes, we can stop for the night. But we should keep moving. Fiona: There are robbers in these woods. We need to find a place to camp. Shrek: I'm scarier than anything we'll see. Come on. Fiona: (insistent) Now! Donkey: Time out! Shrek,
let's make camp. Shrek: Fine. (They enter a cave where Fiona makes it suitable for her needs.) Fiona: Good night, gentlemen. Shrek looks at Donkey for a second before returning to move a boulder in front of Fiona's cave entrance. Later, while sitting by a campfire with Donkey, Shrek points out various star constellations. Donkey asks if the stars can
predict his future, but Shrek explains that they tell stories instead. They have a conversation about their swamp and its significance to Shrek, who seems reluctant to share details about it. Donkey senses that Shrek is hiding something, leading to a subtle confrontation between them. Meanwhile, Fiona secretly observes from her cave as they discuss
their plans for the future. Shrek wakes up, looks at Fiona who's cooking eggs for breakfast, and Donkey is still sleeping. Shrek shakes Donkey awake. They start eating when Donkey compliments Fiona's cooking. However, Shrek soon realizes it was just an excuse to talk to her. The conversation between them reveals they're not as bad as people
expect. Fiona effortlessly takes down Robin Hood and his Merry Men, leaving them unconscious. Shrek watches in admiration as Fiona walks away, but he quickly stops her, asking about her fighting skills. Fiona explains that she had to learn self-defense techniques living alone, and now it's time for her to leave. Shrek is injured by an arrow, which is
stuck in his backside. Fiona tries to remove it, but Shrek winces in pain. Donkey, who has been watching from a distance, runs off to find a special blue flower with red thorns to help his friend. Meanwhile, Donkey searches the forest for the rare flower and eventually finds one on a bush. Back at the scene of the injury, Fiona is still trying to remove
the arrow, but Shrek keeps dodging her attempts. Eventually, he falls over and manages to get free from the arrow's grasp. Donkey returns with the blue flower and red thorns, only to find that nothing out of the ordinary happened. The princess, who was watching from afar, joins them, and they all continue on their journey. Shrek pulls an arrow out
of his backside and winces in pain as Donkey faints from the sight of blood. The group continues on their journey to DuLoc. Along the way, they engage in a series of humorous misadventures, including Shrek crawling up a tree to make it fall over a brook so that Fiona won't get wet, and then using a nearby spiderweb to catch bugs. As they near
DuLoc, they arrive at a windmill on the outskirts of town. Eels sing a song about their beloved monster friend and how they always stick together through thick and thin. Donkey comments on Lord Farquaad's... unusual behavior, but Shrek quickly moves the conversation along. Fiona expresses concern for Donkey's well-being, suggesting that he
might be sick or hurt. Shrek agrees that Donkey doesn't look so good and offers to sit down with him. However, Donkey insists he's fine and tries to demonstrate his agility by turning his head in an odd way, only to yelp in pain. The group stops for dinner, with Shrek cooking up some weed rat on a rotisserie. Fiona is impressed with the dish and
suggests she'll be dining differently tomorrow night when she arrives at DuLoc. Shrek invites her to visit him in the swamp, promising to cook all sorts of delicacies for her, including swamp toad soup and fish eye tartare. As they share a smile, Shrek asks Princess Fiona something, but the text doesn't specify what he's saying. Shrek asks Fiona if she's
going to eat something, but she's actually afraid of the dark. Donkey tries to comfort her, revealing that he's also afraid of the dark. Shrek goes inside, leaving Fiona and Donkey alone. Donkey realizes that Shrek has feelings for Fiona and tries to encourage him to confess his love. However, Shrek is hesitant due to their differences (he's an ogre, she's
a princess). Later, Donkey goes into the windmill and finds Fiona, who has transformed into an ogre at night. She explains that this happens every time the sun sets and that it's due to a spell cast on her by a witch when she was a little girl. The only way to break the curse is for her true love to kiss her before sunset. This is the scene where Princess
Fiona tries to convince Shrek to help her break the spell that turns her into an ogre at night, so she can marry him without marrying Farquaad. However, Shrek has already heard Fiona's confession and still finds her ugly, which makes Fiona feel insecure about their relationship. As Farquaad's party rides off into the distance, the Donkey looks on in
confusion. "What'd I miss?" he asks himself, before spotting the soldiers and muttering to himself about who could have said that - not him, of course! Lord Farquaad steps forward, holding out a piece of paper, which is revealed to be the deed to Shrek's swamp, cleared for their exchange. He asks Princess Fiona to marry him, and she agrees, much to
